I worked with a Life Coach - here's what happened
I have just come to the end of a 3 month life coaching series with the incredible Coach, Emilia Francesca. I’ve had a lot of questions about the experience so I thought I’d share with you what it was all about. Across our time working together I identified what in my life needed changing, introducing or banishing, and took carefully curated steps towards making a difference. It’s been a transformation that may seem small on the outside but has been massive on the inside.
Let’s dive into the details.
What is Life Coaching?
Life coaching first began in the 90s. It somewhat organically came about when psychologists and therapists found themselves working with people that didn’t have a recognised condition, but they felt ‘stuck’. Over time, many therapists started working exclusively with these clients who felt their lives lacked excitement or drive, and this eventually came to be known as life coaching.
Over the last 20 years, life coaching has moved into the mainstream and become a recognised and rated method for dealing with life’s challenges and, more importantly, helping you live life to it’s fullest.
Today, life coaching is one of the fastest growing businesses with an estimated 30,000 practising life coaches worldwide. More and more, people are reaching out to life coaches to address every area of their lives, from health, fitness, careers or stress, to family life, relationships or business.
How does it work?
Typically, a life coach and a client will team up for a set period of time, often between 3 and 6 months. Throughout this time they will:
Work together to assess what the client wants to address in their life, getting to the core of what they most want and need
Set relevant and meaningful goals that will achieve positive change
Map out the journey to achieving them
These goals are usually out of the comfort zone, entirely focused on personal progression and lead to a transformation in the client’s lifestyle, thought patterns, limiting beliefs and so much more.
Unlike a counsellor who often deals with past experiences or helps with mental health issues, a Life Coach focuses on your present and future. They work with you as you are today and help you challenge yourself and reach goals that have felt unattainable in the past.
In between the coaching calls with your coach, you are expected to commit to the actions you set yourself in order to keep moving towards your main goals. The more you put in, the more you get out of the experience!
Why is it helpful?
You may wonder why a coach is needed if you’re not getting a deep psychological assessment or having someone investigate your innermost thoughts for meaning. If it’s just about setting goals, surely you can do this by yourself!?
Working with a coach is a little like working with a personal trainer when you want to improve your fitness. You can do it alone, but with an expert there to help, it’s highly targeted to your specific needs, structured, they ensure you’re taking consistent and effective actions towards your goals and you might fancy them a little. A life coach will:
Ask powerful, thought-provoking questions and have you investigating your lifelong thinking patterns.
Highlight your limiting beliefs and replace them with empowering ones.
Act as an impartial sounding board for your ideas.
Call you out on your excuses.
Provide structure and accountability for your actions.
Help you break down ambitious goals into realistic, achievable and enjoyable actions.
Give you their undivided attention and listen without judgment or opinions.
Celebrate the little wins along the way with you.
They will help you figure your shit out and guide you along the way to more fist pump moments, personal bests, daily adventures, and cheek-achingly happy moments.
Who coached me?
I have just finished working with Emilia Francesca, a certified Life and Wellness Coach. She is based in the UK and we spoke once every two weeks, despite living on opposite sides of the world. I didn’t know what to expect when I first signed up to work with Emilia, and I was a little nervous. I knew I had to make changes in my life, I knew the time had to come eventually and I knew Emilia was exactly the person to give me the friendly shove I needed.
Emilia questioned why I think a certain way and provided strategies for healthier attitudes towards my life as a whole. She celebrated the breakthroughs I had along the way. She called me out when I was in denial about a goal that needed confronting. She pointed out the things I said that were limiting and gave me ‘go-to’ phrases to eradicate those thoughts when they popped up. She was basically my personal Fairy God Mother!
At the start of every call I was excited to debrief on the last couple of weeks and eager to share my new ideas for switching up my strategies for the following fortnight. I left every call feeling like Beyonce and Superwoman combined. Emilia helped me take massive action and made every conversation feel like a celebration of life.
How was it life changing for me?
Before Emilia and I began working together, I filled out a pre-coaching questionnaire. I didn’t analyse or over-think this. I just let the questions prompt instinctive answers and it was this brain vomit that set the basis for the goals we created.
I wanted to approach things holistically, tackling my health, career and relationships. Each fortnight had me reflecting on the actions I’d taken, then forming specific plans to build upon the successes or stumbles I‘d had going forward.
Having come to the end of the series and reflecting back on that questionnaire I filled out 3 months ago I’ve experienced such amazing progress. There has been a massive increase in my fitness and energy. I’ve overcome limiting beliefs about my career and seen a shift in my confidence. I’ve joined new clubs, spiced up my friendships, met new people and felt the ridiculous happy vibes you get after connecting with someone in a stronger way. These were the things I wanted to focus on, and they are all thriving!
Who is Life Coaching for?
Life coaching is for someone who knows they’re not living up to their full potential or wants to take things to the next level. It’s for someone who has a strong desire to make something incredible happen but needs a mentor to guide them there. It’s for people who want to push the boundaries but are held back by fear.
Do you want to ramp up your career and get the promotion, the bigger paycheque or the new role, but lack in the confidence to go for it?
Do you want to travel the world but don’t have the guts to go it alone or quit your job?
Do you want to climb Mount Everest but have no idea how you’d ever be fit enough, afford it or find the time?
If you’re ready to raise the bar, then life coaching is for you.
Life is made up of bills to pay, rude people, first kisses, promotions, the great outdoors, crying children, suspicious moles, travel, finding ‘the one’, amazing friends, annoying friends, kale, investing, weddings and funerals. Who wouldn’t want a compass to help them navigate the craziness of life!? If we deserve a coach in our careers and fitness journeys, then we definitely deserve a coach for our happiness and our sense of achievement.
